CAMP LEGACY

Powered by Black Joy.

Camp Legacy embodies the belief that every child in America should have the opportunity to experience Summer Camp. It is a place where children develop independence, form valuable connections, tackle new obstacles, and immerse themselves in the great outdoors. However, the disparity in traditional overnight summer camp participation is a result of the historical barriers faced by Black individuals, as less than 10% of attendees in America identify as Black. This imbalance can create discomfort for Black campers in predominantly White spaces.

By establishing a shared identity, we witness Camp Legacy campers naturally take on challenges confidently with the support and encouragement of their peers and counselors. For example; tackling the low ropes challenge, overcoming a fear of the dark through a night hike, or lighting their first campfire. Shared customs, routines, and backgrounds provide a sense of belonging in a new environment and encourage campers to fully engage in all that Camp has to offer.

Camp Legacy organically fosters a uniquely inclusive space where campers, counselors, and staff are all

"Powered by the Black joy" that they cultivate.

Camp is a place to unplug and unwind

Social media, while it can be a great entertaining tool, is often a contributing factor in the emotional challenges faced by many young people today. Camp offers a refreshing alternative where kids can disconnect from their devices and immerse themselves in the present moment.

With little internet access and a focus on outdoor activities, Camp encourages kids to engage with the world around them. Many discover that they become so absorbed in the camp experience that they don't even miss their phones. It's a reset, a chance for kids to quiet their minds and reconnect with themselves and nature.

At Camp Legacy, kids can truly be kids.
